Lossless Legs Frequently Asked Answer's
Login Issues - Why can't I log in?
Have you registered? Seriously, you must register in order to log in. Have you been banned from the site? (A message will be displayed if you have.) If so, you should contact a site administrator to find out why. If you have registered and are not banned and you still cannot log in then check and double-check your username and password. Usually this is the problem; if not, contact a site administrator -- they may have incorrect configuration settings for the board.

Login Issues - I've lost my password!
Don't panic! While your password cannot be retrieved it can be reset. To do this go to the login page and click Recover password. Follow the instructions and you should be back online in no time.
top
Login Issues - I registered in the past but cannot log in anymore!
The most likely reasons for this are: you entered an incorrect username or password (check the email you were sent when you first registered) or the administrator has deleted your account for some reason.  Users are pruned after 100 days with no activity

Downloading - What is bittorent?
If you're completely unfamiliar with bittorrent we recommend checking out: http://www.utorrent.com/beginners-guide.php and  http://dessent.net/btfaq/. You should also check out several of the sticky's in the help and how to section of the forum.

Downloading - Can I have more than one account?
There are very few reasons why anyone would need more than one account. Having multiple accounts is discouraged and if you're doing it so you can maintain an alternate identity with a very poor share ratio you will eventually be caught and dealt with. As one LL member has said "keep one account, stand by your identity, chat with friends, be a part of the community."
top
Downloading - Are any of the files I'm downloading located on this server?
No, that's not how bittorrent works. All the files are located on the end user's computers. Lossless Legs is a tracker which connects the clients of the people who are sharing the files.
top
Downloading - How do I download the music?
You will need a bittorrent client. We recommend µtorrent and Azureus. Some people feel that µttorrent uses less system resources. If you're running a Mac you'll probably need Azureus. They can be found here: http://www.utorrent.com/download.php and here: http://azureus.sourceforge.net/download.php. If you download µtorrent make sure you get the installation version because the standalone version won't install automatically.

Downloading - How do I listen to the music once I've downloaded it?
You will need a media player that has a plug-in for shn and flac files if you want to listen to them on your computer without first converting them to wav format. The three most commonly used are winamp, foobar2000, and windows media player. There is a comprehensive list of links to players and plug-ins here: http://wiki.etree.org/index.php?page=SoftwareYouNeed
top
Downloading - How do I burn the music to CD so I can listen to it away from my computer?
You will need to convert the shn and flac files to wav format before you can burn them to cd. The most commonly used programs are Trader's Little Helper, mkwACT (for shn), and Flac Frontend (for flac). A list of links to these programs can be found at the same address provided above for the players. You'll then need to burn the converted wav files to cd with a program like Nero or Roxio.
top
Downloading - Should I keep the original shn and flac file sets after I've burned them?
Yes, if you don't keep the original unaltered shn and flac files you won't be able to reseed or upload to share them with people later. Also if you lose your cd's or they become scratched then you will need to download the shows again. Since wav files are so large it's recommended that you delete them after you've burned your cd's and keep the shn and flac files. Most people then archive the shn and flac files by burning them to DVD so they can remove them from their drives.

Downloading - What is my share ratio and is it important?
Your share ratio can be found in the "User Info" box in the upper right corner of your screen. It represents the amount of information that you've downloaded vs. the amount you've uploaded. It is a general indicator of how much of the music you're sharing back after you've completed downloading it. In an ideal world everyone would have a share ratio of 1.0 which means they uploaded exactly as much as they've downloaded. It's important because if people don't upload then there won't be anything to download and the system won't work.

If you are new to the site and your ratio drops really low it's ok because you haven't had time to upload much yet. You may have jumped on a torrent that was near the end of it's life cycle so there was no one to upload to.  You will want to try to get it back up but don't panic. Just download some shows with lot's of leechers and leave them running long after they're finished. You'll soon be back in good shape. You will want to keep an eye on your ratio at the beginning because if you go all out and download a ton of stuff it's easy to dig yourself into a hole that will be very difficult to get out of. Most people can download about 6 times faster than they can upload so just be aware.

You should always try to leave your torrents running after they've completed because they'll usually finish long before you've reached 1. Hit and run leeching is seriously frowned upon, especially if you're one of the first to complete. You're expected to stick around and help the original uploader get a decent swarm going.

That being said, share ratio is not strictly enforced here like it is at many other sites where you could be banned for failing to maintain it. We are expected to act like responsible adults and police ourselves. The management is very understanding as long as you try to share back, participate in the community by reading and posting in the forums, and show your appreciation to uploaders by at least saying thanks when you grab a file. Above all LL is a community and community participation is more important than your share ratio. If you're downloading massive amounts of music, not sharing any back, and don't even have the decency say to thank you, you will eventually be called to account for your actions. This doesn't apply to the vast majority of users so just do your best and you'll be fine.
top
Downloading - How come I've been uploading for days but my share ratio hasn't changed?
Your stats wont update until you've stopped and restarted your client.
top
Downloading - Are my stats 100% accurate?
No, due to problems beyond our control your stats will never be 100% accurate, particularly right after you've completed a torrent. However the really weird snafus that you'll sometimes see on your torrents will eventually correct themselves, and in the long run your overall stats will be accurate enough to give a good indication of how much you're sharing.
top
Downloading - What does it mean if I'm firewalled and why should I care?
It's very important to have your ports properly forwarded when using bit torrent. If you're using a router or windows firewall you will most likely need to manually forward your ports. You can tell by looking at the indicator in your client at the bottom of the screen. If you've got a green light you're fine but if you've got a red or yellow then you'll need to get it taken care of. Everything may appear to be working fine in a swarm but if you're firewalled it means that you won't be able to accept incoming connections and you'll only be able to connect to people who have their ports forwarded. This severely limits the amount of people you can connect to and it can have a massive effect on the speed of the entire swarm. It only takes a few people that aren't connectable in a swarm to slow the entire thing right down. If everyone at LL had open ports then all our torrents would be insanely fast – especially when the swarms were big. If your ports are closed and there are only one or two other peers involved then you will probably never complete the torrent. It will also make it nearly impossible for someone to help you out with a reseed and most people won't even be inclined to waste their time trying.

If you need to forward your ports you can find detailed instructions on how to do it here: http://portforward.com/. If you still aren't having any luck you should read the sticky in the help & how to section of the forums. If you've made an honest effort to get it figured out but are still having problems then feel free to ask for help in the forums. There are many people here who will be happy to help you out. Sometimes it can be pretty difficult depending on your setup and general level of computer knowledge. Because of this and the fact that some people are behind firewalls which they have no control over we have not made it mandatory although there are many who think we should.

Downloading - How do I increase my download speed?
This subject is way too involved to fully address here. However, we can point you in the right direction. The first thing you'll want to do is make sure your ports are open as explained above. Then you may need to do some tweaking in your client preferences to optimize your speeds and get everything running just exactly perfect. Before you start tweaking you'll want to do a speed test to find out how fast you're connection is. You can find a speed test here:  http://www.dslreports.com/tools - along with lots more info on the whole subject. Once you know the general speed of your connection you'll want to go to the website of whichever client you've chosen and read up on the info there about how to maximize your download speed.

One important thing to remember is that you'll want to make sure you're not constantly maxing out your upload speeds. Your downloads speeds will suffer if your upload bandwidth is congested for reasons which I'm not going to get into here. You'll want to limit or cap your upload speeds to just below the maximum to ensure that info can easily flow both ways. This is also true of browsing the web while your client is running. If you find that you're having trouble surfing and everything is really slow just lower your upload cap a little and it should fix it.

Downloading - What's the maximum # of active torrents that is allowed here?
Members (these are brand new members or people who have been demoted for excessive downloading without sharing back) may have 2 open torrents at any time, Valued Members may have 12 and Audio Liberation Activists may have 20. This number includes torrents that are both uploading and downloading. This is automatically enforced by the tracker and if your client attempts to open more than this then they won't be allowed to connect. This is because the server doesn't have unlimited capabilities. We have 10,000 members and if the number of active torrents was not limited the server load would quickly get out of hand. Realistically speaking, unless you've got FIOS or a T1 connection there's no reason you would want more than four or five torrents running at a time anyway.

Requesting Reseed Etiquette
1.  Be on the torrent waiting for the reseeder or you will not get reseed. If reseeder gets 2 request at same time 1 leecher is on the show ready to go and the other is no where in sight (guess who is getting the reseed?).

2.  Don't be NATed if you don't know what that means here is a link that will help you http://www.shnflac.net/forum.php?action=viewtopic&topicid=76

3.  Be courteous of the reseeder i.e; don't have 14 torrents on 4 different sites running, make sure you can pull a healthy bit of data (no pun intended) from the reseeder.  Another reason for this if you are not pulling at least 10-15kbps (AT LEAST I SAY) you are wasting the reseeders time sure you can wait to get it but we are trying to share with others we are not at your beckon call to only get the music to you.
